EXPANDING ACCESS TO TECHNOLOGY FOR INDIVIDUALS
WITH DISABILITIES
H.R.
4278, Assistive Technology Act of 2004

Millions
of Americans depend on assistive technologies to help face the challenges
of living with a disability. Wheelchairs,
communication devices and computer hardware are some examples of
assistive technology devices that can significantly improve and maintain
a high quality of life for individuals with disabilities, allowing them
to gain employment, go to school and live independently.
The
bipartisan Assistive Technology Act of 2004 (H.R. 4278) will strengthen assistive technology
programs by refocusing efforts on providing more direct aid to individuals with
disabilities. By requiring states to spend a bulk of their
assistive technology grants on activities that directly benefit
individuals with disabilities, this bipartisan bill will help guarantee
that individuals have better access to assistive technology. The bill
encourages states to invest in the programs that have been shown the most
effective in providing assistive technology devices.
