Helping Local Schools and Parents Promote Healthy Choices for Children

H.R. 3873, Child Nutrition Improvement & Integrity Act

Sponsor: Rep. Mike Castle (R-DE)

The federal government invests more than $16 billion annually in child nutrition programs under the Child Nutrition Act, Richard B. Russell National School Lunch Act, and related programs.  This year, through reauthorization of these laws, Congress has an opportunity to strengthen these programs and improve their effectiveness for America ’s most vulnerable children.

Education Reform Subcommittee Chairman Mike Castle (R-DE) introduced the Child Nutrition Improvement & Integrity Act to meet this goal.  The bipartisan legislation includes provisions to strengthen nutritional service programs, promote healthy choices among children, and address growing concerns that the federal school lunch program does not do enough to ensure free and reduced-price lunch benefits go to children who qualify.

The bill reauthorizes the National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs, Child and Adult Care Food Program, After-School Snack Program, Summer Food Service Program, and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program, and makes common-sense reforms to improve services and strengthen the programs on behalf of disadvantaged children and families.

The Child Nutrition Improvement & Integrity Act seeks to ensure the more than $16 billion taxpayers invest annually in these programs is targeted effectively toward the health and nutritional needs of our nation’s most vulnerable children and families.  On March 24, 2004, the U.S. House overwhelmingly approved the Child Nutrition Improvement & Integrity Act by a vote of 419-5.

Issue Summary: Child Nutrition
