SUPPORTING AMERICA'S LIBRARIES AND MUSEUMS
H.R. 13, Museum and Library Services Act of 2003

Sponsor: Select Education Subcommittee Chairman Pete Hoekstra (R-MI)

The Museum and Library Services Act, introduced by Select Education Subcommittee Chairman Pete Hoekstra (R-MI), was overwhelmingly approved by the House of Representatives in March and signed into law by President Bush on September 25, 2003, marking an important next step in ensuring that the President’s education reforms signed into law two years ago are properly implemented.  The bill requires that all library activities are coordinated with activities under the No Child Left Behind Act, President Bush’s landmark education reform legislation.

The bill, H.R. 13, reauthorizes the Museum and Library Services Act (MLSA), which provides essential federal support for libraries and museums across America in coordination with state, local, and private efforts.  The MLSA was first enacted in 1996, during the 104th Congress.
