"Thank the Lord" for Secret Ballots, Unless You are an American Worker
Could it be the House Democrats are actually thankful for the opportunity to vote by secret ballot? That's what the House Democrat Rules Committee Chair Louise M. Slaughter of New York had to say when asked about her votes on the Steering Committee in the Democrat leadership races. Rep. Slaughter was quoted early this week in CQ Today's article titled "Dingell and Waxman Express Confidence as Vote on Chairmanship Nears":
“It’s a secret ballot,” she said. “Thank the Lord.”
What's that old saying? "What's good for the goose...." Apparently the same rules that apply to congressional Democrats don't also apply to hardworking Americans. Labor unions have been openly pressing for enactment of so-called “card check” legislation in the first 100 days of the new Administration, and House Democrats are poised to do just that.

Comment by: Union Busting February 26, 2009 03:13 PM Workers should decide if they want a secret ballot not management. Management wants the vote so they can delay elections, intimidate workers in one on one meetings to dicourage workers from forming unions, fire workers that support unions and do what ever they can to delay or avoid a vote. Don't be fooled by the Republican paternalism. It's just another form of union busting. We've had enough. Let us decide if we want a vote or not. |

I agree with Republican proposal to make ALL union organizing attempts decided by secret ballot. It is interesting that pro-labor positions are about fighting management intimidation. But none of it addresses union and co-worker intimidation. Management does not set election schedules, the NLRB does. Yes, management holds group meetings and one-on-one meetings with employees to talk about the decision to not unionize. Union do the same thing. Unions can carry on campaigns in support of their position for months before an election is set. They also hold meetings in which management cannot be present, and meet with employees individually to convince them to sign a card. |
